Education

Across the country, thousands of dedicated and trained NAMI volunteers bring peer-led programs to a wide variety of community settings, from churches to NAMI Affiliates. With the unique understanding of people with lived experience, these impactful mental health programs and support groups provide outstanding free education, skills training, and valuable support. Most programs are available in Spanish and online. Please note that NAMI programs are not open to student or professional observation. As with our support groups, there are a wide range of education courses and resources available tailored to meet different needs:

  • NAMI Peer-to-Peer education course: NAMI Peer-to-Peer is a FREE 8-week mental health, wellness, and recovery class open to any adult (18+) with a mental health condition. It provides participants with education, skills, and support to enhance their lives. Participants learn how to strengthen relationships, balance changing healthcare needs, and better understand their mental health and recovery.
  • NAMI Family-to-Family education course: NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 8-session educational program for family, significant others, and friends of people with mental health conditions. It is a designated evidenced-based program. This means that research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition.
  • NAMI Homefront education course: NAMI Homefront is a free, six-session education program for family members, partners, or friends who are interested in learning about mental health conditions experienced by their military Service Members and Veterans relatives/friends.
  • NAMI Basics: NAMI Basics is a free, six-session program designed for parents and other family caregivers of children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral difficulties. NAMI Basics helps parents and other family caregivers of children to understand the illnesses that are causing those behavioral difficulties, and the critical role families play in the treatment of those illnesses.
  • NAMI Smarts for Advocacy: NAMI Tallahassee has an active NAMI Smarts for Advocacy committee which collaborates with committees from other local affiliates in Florida. The goal of this collaboration is to offer a united voice to the state legislature on a focused number of mental health issues each year. NAMI Smarts for Advocacy training is offered regularly for NAMI members who wish to join the committee. This is a hands-on advocacy training program that helps people living with mental illness, friends and family transform their passion and lived experience into skillful grassroots advocacy.

Community Presentations

Across the country, trained NAMI volunteers bring peer-led community presentations to a wide variety of settings, from churches to schools. With the unique understanding of people with lived experience, these programs provide outstanding free education, advocacy and support.

  • In Our Own Voice: In Our Own Voice presentations change attitudes, assumptions, and ideas about people with mental health conditions. These free, 40, 60, or 90 minute presentations provide a personal perspective of mental health conditions, as leaders with lived experience talk openly about what it’s like to have a mental health condition.
  • Ending the Silence: NAMI Ending the Silence is an in-school presentation designed to teach middle and high school students about the signs and symptoms of mental illness, how to recognize the early warning signs and the importance of acknowledging those warning signs.
  • Mental Health in the Workplace
  • Sharing Hope: Sharing Hope is an outreach effort to members of the African American and other cultural communities. Lack of information and misconceptions surrounding mental health issues prevent many members of these communities from getting the help and support they need. NAMI-Tallahassee has materials and volunteers available to provide information that can help increase mental health awareness in minority communities.
  • FaithNet: NAMI FaithNet is an information resource and network for NAMI members, clergy, and people of faith from all faith traditions. The goal of NAMI FaithNet is to encourage the development of welcoming and spiritually nourishing environments in every place of worship.
