2-1-1 Big Bend: Call 211 or 850.617.6333 or callers can text their zip code to 898211. The agency provides 24-hour access to a free, confidential hotline. 2-1-1 Big Bend is a private, telephone counseling, crisis intervention and referral service in Tallahassee (formerly known as the Telephone Counseling and Referral Service.) The agency also provides a referral database on their website. Just as you would call 9-1-1 for emergencies, you can call 2-1-1 for human service information and assistance. They are available 24 hours a day to listen and provide emotional support, crisis counseling, suicide prevention, and information & referrals. You do not have to be in crisis to call, there is no eligibility criteria, and their services are free. They help you navigate through the maze of community services in a nonjudgmental manner. Because life is 24/7, so are they! Link to: www.211bigbend.org .

Tallahassee Police Department and Leon County Sheriff’s Office Central Dispatch – The 24 hour non-emergency number is 850.606.5800. Ask for a C I T (Crisis Intervention Team) officer. If calling 911, specifically tell the 911 operator this: “I am requesting the aid of a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officer.” The operator will then send specially trained law enforcement officers, if available; who are trained in dealing with individuals undergoing a mental illness crises. You can request that officers arrive without lights or sirens.

Hospitals and Receiving Facilities:

The Apalachee Center, Inc., 2634 Capital Circle NE, Tallahassee, FL, provides comprehensive mental health services for Leon and surrounding counties – providing adult and children’s services. Call 850.523.3303 for 24 hour evaluation and admissions, or toll free at 800.226.2931 for emergencies outside of Leon County. Serving the 8 counties of the Big Bend region in North Florida, Apalachee Center includes Eastside Psychiatric Hospital, Capital Therapy, Crisis Stabilization, Detox services and a 12-bed inpatient children’s psychiatric center (ages 6-18)with specific services under their Behavior Excellence and Care for Children’s Health Unit (BEACH), as well as five residential programs and eight outpatient clinics throughout the Big Bend region.

One component of Apalachee crisis services includes PATH (Positive Alternative to Hospitalization). PATH is a short-term inpatient program designed to prevent hospitalization and stabilize a crisis. Additionally, Apalachee’s PATH unit serves all individuals without insurance and the Detox unit serves all individuals brought by law enforcement under the Marchman Act (involuntary assessment).

The Center also provides The Community Action Team (CAT), an intensive community based service, for youths aged 11 to 21 and their families. It provides some services not provided by less intensive outpatient services, has a 24/7 crisis line which allows team members to be deployed when necessary to avert crisis stabilization episodes or law enforcement involvement and also has the unique ability to provide respite care to fatigued caregivers in some families. Respite services entails providing short-term supervision of a youth away from the family to offer temporary relief as a planned event or to improve family stability in a time of crisis for a maximum of four hours a day. Since CAT can accept clients regardless of their insurance status, CAT can increase access to the needed level of services for some who otherwise might encounter that as a barrier. CAT serves a vital role for providing treatment services in the community because it acts as a “step-up” from traditional outpatient services when little or no progress is being made or a “step-down”from a long-term placement, such as a residential program. Since the CAT focus is on keeping youths in the community and keeping families together, CAT can substantially improve outcomes for families and reduce costs by reducing the need for residential services such as Statewide Inpatient Psychiatric programs (SIPPs), Department of Juvenile Justice Detention facilities, and DCF group and foster care placement.

Apalachee Center, Inc. is the Central Receiving Facility(CRF) for Baker Act evaluations. The CRF operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year and serves the Big Bend region (Franklin,Jefferson, Gadsden, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Taylor, and Wakulla Counties) as the single point of entry for all individuals who are subject to the involuntary Baker Act (per 394.463, Florida Statues) and Marchman Act (397.675, Florida Statutes). Once an individual participates in the assessment process conducted by an RN and Licensed Counselor, the appropriate disposition is determined. Some may be admitted to an inpatient unit, while others may need only a crisis counseling session and/or a referral for outpatient care. Through a rotation system, individuals needing admission may go to either Capital Regional’s Behavioral Health unit, Tallahassee Memorial Behavioral Health Center, or Apalachee Center’s Eastside Psychiatric Hospital. Visit www.apalacheecenter.org for more details and services.

The FIRST Team by Apalachee Center is The Forensic Intervention and Re-entry Services Team (FIRST) and serves adults who have a mental illness in the criminal justice system in Leon County and, without intervention, would be at risk of commitment to a forensic state hospital. Individuals are served at every stage of the criminal justice process—pending, incarceration, mental health pre-trial release, and mental health probation or conditional release. The purpose of the FIRST Team is to enhance coordination between the criminal justice and mental health systems in order to achieve case disposition and divert individuals from the detention facility to community services. For more information see The First Team video.
