Basics

NAMI Basics

NAMI Basics is a free 6-session educational program designed for parents and other family caregivers of children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral difficulties. This program is free to participants, 99% of whom say they would recommend the program to others. NAMI Basics helps parents and other family caregivers of children to understand the illnesses that are causing those behavioral difficulties, and the critical role families play in the treatment of those illnesses.

The program is taught by NAMI-trained teachers who are also the parents or family caregivers of individuals who experienced emotional or behavioral difficulties prior to age 13.

What You’ll Gain

NAMI Basics class provides information and strategies for taking care of the child you love, and you will discover you are not alone in your struggles. Recovery is a journey, and there is hope.

Big Bend Community-Based Care Grant Benefits NAMI Affiliates in the Florida Panhandle

BBCBCBig Bend Community-Based Care (BBCBC) is the entity charged with managing mental health and substance abuse services from Madison and Taylor Counties across the entire Panhandle of Florida, north to Georgia, and east to Alabama.  Within this region are four NAMI affiliates: NAMI Pensacola, NAMI Okaloosa and Walton Counties, NAMI Bay County, and NAMI Tallahassee.

As a part of the relief effort extended to victims of Hurricane Michael, which devastated the entire region in the fall of 2018, BBCBC has made funds available to all four NAMI affiliates for the training of program leaders.  These leaders will work throughout their communities to offer NAMI programs at no charge to all who need them, especially citizens in the rural areas of the region.

For NAMI Tallahassee, this presents the opportunity to offer training to many of our members who are eager to become program leaders. Notably, we will be able to offer NAMI Peer to Peer training, an eight-week course for peers who are working toward sustaining their recovery.  A new program to this area, we anticipate an enthusiastic reception from the peer community.

Additionally, NAMI Tallahassee will offer training for Family Support Group, NAMI In Our Own Voice, and NAMI Connection Peer Support Group program leaders.  While all of these NAMI signature programs are available in the Tallahassee area at this time, we hope to train some leaders from surrounding counties while increasing our current capacity here in the capital city.

For more information about participating in any of these available trainings, which will be offered free on weekend days, please email admin@nami-tallahassee.org
